BIRD IMAGES

My quest for capturing stellar wildlife shots for the art market brought me to the state of Florida. I was here to click bird images. These would be the perfect bird pictures for sale in the art market. I was at the Florida beach with minutes to the sunrise. The air smelled of the ocean and I could taste the salt in the air as the light breeze played with my hair.

The enigma of the three-legged bird

I watched the tides come in and go out as I waited for my opportunity to capture bird images. In came flying this cinnamon-colored bird with its beak almost the same size as its legs. It walked around in the sand in a strut, pushing its head forward with spasmodic steps. I watched in utter fascination as this bird punctured the earth with its tweezer-like beak for prey.

I wondered how this creature maintained its balance with a beak of that size. With my gaze fixed on the bird, I prepared my equipment to click these bird pictures for sale.

The Third ‘leg’

The long-billed curlew has to deal with its 8-inch down-curved bill while feeding, preening, flying, scratching and drinking. While hunting for prey, it shows great adroitness as it uses its long bill to poke the mud to look for prey. This bill is highly sensitive and acts almost independently. It has a strengthening structure inside it that prevents it from breaking. This, however, means that is cannot put its tongue down the bill to help grab and swallow. Hence, they throw their prey up in the air before catching and eating it.

Threat of Extinction

These species face a great threat of extinction and their numbers have gone down considerably in the last few years. The conversion of their natural grassland breeding habitats to agriculture and housing is the cause of this decline in their numbers. Hunting also plays a huge role. Being a threat that is only rapidly increasing, climate change and development cause habitat loss. Pesticides may also be a cause since it reduces the curlews’ food supply.

Pictures of Birds as a Fashion Photograph

I wanted to shoot this bird photograph just as I would shoot a model in fashion photography. More often than not in fashion, we click pictures in a way to make the model’s legs look long. It is all about the proportion of the body. I wanted to do the same with my bird images, making its beak look like one of its legs. So I got down on the ground and lay flat on the sand beneath. While clicking my bird pictures for sale, the bird kept walking towards me curiously. I was getting all the bird images I needed.

This particular bird photograph makes it seem like the bird has three legs. It reminds me of a dysfunctional tripod stand.

Fashion Modeling

Often times I’ve had little girls come up to me, asking me what it takes to be a fashion model. What I look into before deciding somebody who would fit my project. And most importantly, what size one needs to be to join the modeling industry. And there is one thing, without a doubt, that I tell anybody who asks me. A lot goes on in the fashion industry. The prime being that we work on our photographs after clicking them. Fashion photographs are altered a great deal on the editing table. So what you may see on a photograph may not always be how the model actually looks like. I’m always urging little girls to not starve themselves to look or feel a certain way. The images that you see are doctored and what a photographer looks for, is proportion, not size.

Naturally, this cannot be said for wildlife photography. One just had to face the challenges of an uncontrolled environment and make the most of it.
