HORSES GRAZING

Firsts are important. First impressions, first jobs, first friends, and first pets are all things we value more than the second time around. The initial interaction we have with things can really set the precedent for how we will continue to interact with them in the future. Having a bad first impression of someone can taint how you think of them and affect how you greet them the next time you see them. Similarly, the way we greet our mornings can dictate how we go about spending the rest of the day.

Many of us don’t want to admit how much our emotions can influence us. Admitting to it can make us feel sensitive or weak at times. However, it is important to acknowledge and understand them and why we need them. Emotions aren’t rouge feelings that we have zero control over. Instead, they can be manifestations of our own thoughts. We luckily do have control over our thoughts. We can decide what to focus on, to think positively about something, or to ignore hurtful thoughts. These can have a huge impact on how we process our emotions. Having control over what and how you think about things can consequently help you control your emotions. However, you do have to establish your thoughts first.

Starting Your Day

When we wake up in the morning, most of us are not thrilled about it. It may be your irritating alarm taunting you to wake up, or you still feeling sleepy but it can be easy to sink into a negative headspace. However, training yourself to have a positive outlook when you first wake up can give you the power to take on the rest of the day with positivity. The more you do this, the greater a habit it will be to maintain this headspace.

It may seem like an oversimplification, but happy thoughts do lead to happy emotions. Seeking out and nurturing habits that can elevate happy thoughts will naturally condone feelings of well-being and positivity. It can help to think about things you love. Whether it’s a person or a thing or an activity, thinking of the happiness you get from it can help manifest happy emotions. So visualize these things in the morning when you need a reason to get out of bed. Remind yourself that there is positivity all around you and to focus on that for the sake of your emotional well-being.

We are all prone to getting caught up in cycles of negativity. It can be initially gratifying to have our misfortunes validated. We can sulk and grieve and hold on to that for the whole day. It’s often easier and more comforting than making a conscious effort to stay positive. In the long run, these negative thoughts offer nothing more than just the initial validation. Focusing on things you are grateful for instead can shift your whole mindset and your day can become brighter.
