BLACK AND WHITE MONKEY PHOTOS

“Know from whence you came. If you know whence you came from, there are absolutely no limitations to where you can go.” ― James Baldwin

If you grew up in a small town and moved away when you got older, you’re probably familiar with the feeling of living for the present. There’s nothing wrong with truly taking in and appreciating your present situation, especially if you didn’t enjoy your past very much. However, there is much to gain from accepting and also learning from your past. As constantly growing and changing individuals, a big part of who we are is defined by who we were.

Much of our lives are defined by the choices we made in the past. This doesn’t mean that we are limited or held back by these past choices. However, it does mean that we have to acknowledge how we got to the present. Every day we have the opportunity to do something new. We can always act on our present circumstances to define ourselves, just as we did in the past. Every day, there are new choices to make, new lessons to learn, and also new paths to take. Each day of our present can define our futures.

LEARNING FROM HISTORY

American poet, singer, memoirist, and civil rights activist, Maya Angelou had said, “I have great respect for the past. If you don’t know where you’ve come from, you don’t know where you’re going. I have respect for the past, but I’m a person of the moment. I’m here, and I do my best to be completely centered at the place I’m at, then I go forward to the next place.” She sums up the almost oxymoron idea of acknowledging your past while being grown in the present. The importance of this, which often goes unmentioned, is that they both go hand in hand.

There are lessons to be learned from history, especially your own. Making informed decisions in the present requires that you use the knowledge that you gained from the past. So don’t dwell on old mistakes and sulk over what could have been. Instead, ask the right questions about what happened and what you can do to prevent yourself from repeating them. Those who know their roots are the most prepared to live life to their full potential in the present. Don’t brush your past selves away while pursuing your present. Instead, listen to them and the lessons that they have learned. They could keep you from committing the same mistakes and rather remind you why you have to keep pushing forward.
